When Adventure Leads Somewhere Unexpected | Saniyah’s Journey Episode 1
As children grow, they begin looking beyond the familiar routines of home, school, and everyday responsibilities. They may become restless, question why things always seem the same, or dream about adventures that take them somewhere entirely new.
For parents and caregivers, that restlessness can sometimes sound like dissatisfaction. But beneath those questions may be a growing curiosity about the world and a desire to discover who they are beyond the life they've always known.
And while children may eagerly wish for change, experiencing something unfamiliar can bring feelings they never expected. Excitement can become uncertainty. Independence can suddenly feel lonely. And the familiar things that once seemed ordinary may become the very things they miss most.
In the first episode of Saniyah's Journey, a young Aziza fairy dreams of a life beyond her daily responsibilities caring for the animals of Gianna. But when an unexpected event carries her far from home, she discovers that adventure doesn't always begin the way we imagine.
Her arrival in Glimmerwood introduces her to an unfamiliar world—and someone willing to offer kindness when she needs it most. Growing up isn't only about discovering what lies beyond the familiar. It's also about learning that we can find courage, friendship, and understanding when life takes an unexpected turn.
Saniyah sat in silence, watching a pride of lions resting in the shade of a large tree. The heavy afternoon heat hung in the air as the sun slowly lowered toward the horizon. Her mind drifted as she watched them. It was her job to protect the animals, and she loved caring for them. Still, she wondered if there was more to life than this dry, dusty grassland. Heat shimmered across the landscape as she wiped the dust from her legs. What else is out there? She wondered.
Saniyah flew home as the sun set. Dinner was waiting for her, as usual. She was late getting home, so her family had already eaten and were sitting by the fire. The flames crackled in the night air as glowing embers floated toward the night sky.
“Hi, Saniyah. How was your day?” her father asked.
“Everything was the same as usual. The animals gathered at the waterhole this morning. I was going to take a poison leaf from a baby elephant, but his mother grabbed him with her trunk before I could,” Saniyah said solemnly.
“You sound disappointed,” said her mother.
“Mom, do you ever get tired of doing the same thing every day?”
“What do you mean, dear?”
“Every day I either go to school or care for the animals. That’s it.”
“You do chores,” her father added with a slight chuckle.
“Yes, Dad. I do chores,” Saniyah replied with a hint of sarcasm.
“Sweetheart, you know we are Aziza fairies. It is our job to care for the animals, even though they don’t know it.”
“I know, Mom. I just wish there was more excitement.”
Saniyah looked down at her food. Even dinner was the same dates and bananas they ate every day. There has to be more to life than this, she thought.
That night, Saniyah lay on her leaf, gazing at the moon. Suddenly, a shooting star flashed across the sky. She remembered the old belief that a wish made upon a shooting star might come true. Closing her eyes, she whispered, “I wish my life had more excitement.” She opened them and continued watching the silvery moon until she finally fell asleep.
The next morning, her family ate breakfast together as usual. After saying goodbye, Saniyah flew out into the savanna to care for the animals. A giraffe stretched his neck as far as he could, trying to reach the highest leaves of an acacia tree. Saniyah giggled when he slipped and stumbled over a small root. Nearby, a mother elephant swung her trunk at a monkey who was trying to climb onto her baby’s back. Saniyah watched from a limb and smiled. Maybe caring for the animals isn’t so bad after all, she thought. They certainly seemed happy.
Suddenly, the bright blue sky began to darken as a strange cluster of clouds gathered in the distance. The animals grew restless and began to run. Dust rose from the ground as more animals joined the stampede. Saniyah stood up. The wind grew stronger, and the strange clouds began forming a circular pattern. Antelope and gazelles leaped across the plains in a way Saniyah had never seen before. She stared at the sky as the clouds darkened and the wind howled around her. Saniyah was horrified and knew it was time to leave. She needed to find somewhere safe, but she was too far from home.
The dark grey clouds began to spin, forming a massive funnel. Saniyah watched in terror as it stretched down from the sky and touched the dusty grassland. Dirt and grass burst into the air, swirling wildly in the powerful wind. Trees swayed from side to side, bending almost to the ground.
“What is that?” cried Saniyah. She struggled to climb down the tree, gripping the bark tightly as the wind threatened to pull her away.
Saniyah screamed for help until her voice grew hoarse. Her body was nearly parallel to the ground as she clung desperately to the tree trunk. First with both hands…then one… then none. The wind swept her into the spinning funnel. Round and round she tumbled, squeezing her eyes shut to keep out the dirt. She continued crying for help, hoping someone-anyone-would hear her. But no one came. After a while, her cries faded. Exhausted and frightened, she could no longer fight against the powerful wind. She thought of her family. She thought of the savanna. And as silent tears slipped down her cheeks, everything went black.
When Saniyah awoke, everything was still. Her eyes remained closed. She wasn’t moving, and she could no longer hear or feel the wind. Slowly, she moved her fingers. Soft, cushiony grass brushed against her hands. She stretched her feet and felt cool water. Saniyah cautiously opened her eyes. Above her was a beautiful, sunlit blue sky and birds chirping in the nearby trees.
“Hello!”
Startled, Saniyah sat up. A gentle hand reached towards her and helped her to her feet.
“My name is Zilphia. What’s yours?”
“I’m Saniyah,” she replied. Saniyah looked at the beautiful stream beside her and the lush grass and trees behind Zilphia.
“I’m sorry,” Zilphia said gently. “I don’t understand what you’re saying.” She could tell the stranger was a fairy because of her wings, but she had never seen a fairy quite like her before.
“My name is Saniyah,” she repeated. Then Saniyah realized she had been speaking the language of the animals; a language only they understood it. “My name is Saniyah,” she said again, this time in a language Zilphia understood.
“Hello Saniyah! Are you okay? I heard you crying for help.”
“I feel okay now, but I was trapped in a strange cloud, and it brought me here. Where am I?”
“You’re in Glimmerwood. Where are you from?”
“I’m from Gianna.”
“I’ve never heard of that,” Zilphia replied.
“I’ve never heard of Glimmerwood,” said Saniyah. “We don’t have thick, green grass like this where I’m from… or a beautiful blue stream.”
“Really?!” Zilphia asked curiously. She had never met anyone like Saniyah.
“No,” Saniyah answered softly. She tried to fight back her tears, but they slowly began to fall.
“What’s wrong?” Zilphia asked.
“How do I get home if I don’t know where I am?” Saniyah asked, looking around at the unfamiliar surroundings.
“Come with me,” Zilphia said compassionately. “I’ll show you around Glimmerwood until we find a way to get you back home.”
Thank you for joining Saniyah as she begins her journey in Glimmerwood and discovers the importance of friendship in an unfamiliar land. Join us next week as the magic of Glimmerwood continues.
