When Being Alone Doesn't Mean You're Lonely — Lyrion's Journey (Episode 3)
Sometimes, seeing a child spend time alone can make us wonder if they're feeling lonely. But being alone and feeling lonely aren't always the same thing.
Some children find comfort in memories of people they love. Others become absorbed in learning, creating, or pursuing something important to them. And some simply enjoy the quiet pleasure of their own company—knowing that the people they love are still part of their lives, even when they aren't beside them.
In this chapter of Lyrion's Journey, Lyrion and Zilphia travel beyond the familiar paths of Glimmerwood and meet three very different creatures, each with a different experience of solitude, friendship, family, and belonging.
Their journey offers families a gentle opportunity to talk about what it means to feel connected—and to remind children that belonging isn't measured by how many people surround us at any particular moment.
Sometimes, the people we love are beside us. Sometimes, they're farther away. And sometimes, we simply enjoy a little time to ourselves. None of those things means we don't belong.
The next morning, Glimmerwood woke beneath a blanket of clouds. The heavy, gray overcast slowly drifted across the village, casting long, eerie shadows on everything below.
Lyrion sat quietly on the edge of his bed, pulling the laces of his boots through their worn loops. Outside his window, a pair of swallows sang cheerfully as they bounced up and down in the breezy morning air. Lyrion smiled because the forest always sounded happiest before the rain.
As he tightened the last knot, something made him pause. A low... deep rumble echoed in the air. It wasn’t thunder. It came from somewhere beyond the trees. Lyrion slowly looked at the window as the sound faded. He tilted his ear towards it, listening to see if the sound would return.
"Maybe I imagined it," he whispered.
Beep! Beep! His glowing orb bounced out of its holder and rolled across the floor into his hat. He laughed. Only one person made it vibrate so briskly. He quickly picked it up and watched the tiny sphere shimmer until Zilphia's smiling face appeared.
"Hi Lyrion! I was hoping you were awake!" She blurted out in one breath.
"I am now," he replied wittily.
Zilphia giggled. "I need your help."
Lyrion leaned closer. “What’s up?”
"My little brother broke out in terrible hives after chasing glasswing butterflies yesterday. My mom says there's a special woodland moss growing on the far side of Glimmerwood."
"The far side?"
Zilphia nodded. "I've never been there before."
Lyrion looked at the dark clouds gathered outside and mumbled quietly to himself, “Me neither.” He nervously shuffled his feet against the bed. "Will it take long?"
"I hope not."
Almost as if the forest had been listening, rain began tapping gently against the cottage roof. Lyrion looked across the room at his mother. She had already wrapped his green traveling cloak across her arm.
"I thought you might be going out today," she said with a gentle smile.
"You did?"
"A mother notices many things." Her wise eyes glistened as she fastened the cloak around his shoulders before placing a small satchel into his hands. "Remember what we talked about yesterday."
Lyrion nodded. "The forest is beautiful..."
"Yes... but beautiful places can sometimes be deceiving," she finished.
He repeated the words silently to himself, then stepped outside. The rain had become a steady mist by the time Lyrion met Zilphia beneath the ancient Tree of Wisdom. Its silver leaves shimmered despite the cloudy sky.
"You've come seeking the Healing Moss," the tree said before either of them could speak.
They looked at each other in amazement.
"How did you know?" Zilphia asked.
The great tree chuckled. "The forest has many voices." He stretched one of his branches towards a narrow trail hidden beneath twisting vines. "Follow the Lantern Path. It will lead you to enlightening surprises.”
Lyrion frowned. "We're looking for moss that heals."
"You are," the tree replied. "But sometimes the journey is the medicine."
The trail led them beyond Glimmerwood Stream deep into a quiet part of the forest that neither of them had ever seen before. As they approached a small clearing, they noticed an elderly bear sitting peacefully beside a fallen log. His gray fur glistened with rain as he watched butterflies flutter between the flower petals. He smiled warmly when he saw Lyrion and Zilphia coming.
"Good morning."
"Good morning," Zilphia replied kindly.
Lyrion noticed there was only one set of pawprints. "Do you live here alone?" he asked.
"I do."
"Aren't you lonely?"
The old bear's eyes sparkled. "Oh, no." He looked toward the trees as though seeing memories instead of branches. "I’ve shared many adventures with my friends… too many to count. We climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and watched countless sunsets." The bear’s smile never faded. "Those moments still live inside me."
"So, you don't feel alone?"
"I miss them." The bear nodded gently. "But you’re never alone when you’ve belonged to an amazing family and friends. Even if they can’t be here to stand beside you." The bear placed one large paw over his heart. "It's the love you’ve shared that’s truly endless."
Zilphia and Lyrion thanked him before continuing down the trail. Lyrion walked quietly. He had never thought about memories that way. A little farther along, they saw a young moose balancing an open book on his antlers while following an army of ants beneath a tree. He was distracted and barely noticed them.
"Oh… hello!" The moose smiled apologetically. "I'm terribly sorry. I have an examination tomorrow."
"Do you study all the time?" Zilphia asked.
The moose laughed. "Almost."
"Don't your friends mind?"
"Sometimes they wish I had more free time."
"And your family?"
"I don't see them as often as I'd like." The moose’s expression softened. "But they know why." He placed the book on the ground beside the ant mound. "Love doesn't disappear simply because life is busy."
Lyrion looked thoughtful. "So... your family and friends still know you belong with them even though you’re not there?"
"Yes… and I will always," smiled the moose.
The wind howled through the leaves as the rain finally began to fade. A low, heavy growl echoed within it. Lyrion stopped as they reached a fork in the road. He looked over his left shoulder towards the sound.
“What’s wrong,” asked Zilphia.
“I thought I heard something. Did you hear it?”
“No. What did it sound like?”
“I don’t know. The leaves rustling in the wind make it difficult to say for sure.”
“C’mon,” said Zilphia. “It was probably just the wind making weird noises.”
She looked down the other path. There, tucked beneath a flowering bush, stood the neatest little cottage she had ever seen. Every stone sparkled and every flower grew in perfect rows.
A cheerful hedgehog was stirring a pot of soup while humming to himself. "You two are soaked."
"We're looking for the Healing Moss," Zilphia explained.
"I know where it grows." He pointed towards a glowing hillside. "But first, would you care for lunch?" He proudly lifted his soup spoon.
They happily accepted. As they ate, Lyrion glanced around.
"Do you spend a lot of time by yourself?"
"I do."
"Aren't you lonely?"
The hedgehog chuckled. "Oh, goodness, no. I enjoy visiting my friends. And I enjoy coming home." He winked at them as he looked at his tidy cottage. "I love my quiet time. I also love cooking. But I especially love watching the beautiful sunsets… alone,” he smiled. "Being alone isn't the same as being lonely.”
Lyrion blinked. He had never considered that. He rubbed his forehead as he watched the little hedgehog humming cheerfully.
"The secret is learning to enjoy the company of friends when they are with you... and the company of yourself when they are not."
Lyrion and Zilphia thanked him for the meal and hurried down the path to the glowing hills. They were amazed to find the hill covered with white moss that glowed even in the dim sunlight. As they gathered the Healing Moss and began walking home, the clouds slowly separated, flooding the forest with a golden wash of sunlight.
On the way home, Lyrion looked back along the winding trail towards the forest. He thought of the three strangers they had met. The setting sun warmed his cheeks as he reflected on their different lives and their different perspectives about belonging. Yet somehow... neither of them were lonely.
When they passed the Tree of Wisdom, Lyrion rested his fingers on the orb inside his satchel. Maybe belonging wasn't about finding the place where everyone was exactly like you. Maybe... it was about carrying love and friendship wherever your journey leads.
“Thanks for coming with me. I wouldn’t have wanted to go on this adventure with anyone else but you.”
Lyrion blushed. He tried to hide it, but his silvery mushrooms began to glow as he turned towards his cottage.
Just then— far off among the dark pines— a low, deep growl echoed through Glimmerwood. Lyrion stopped. Zilphia looked at him.
"You heard it too?"
He nodded slowly. This time, he knew he hadn't imagined it. The forest had whispered once again. And somewhere beyond the trees... something was waiting.
